AKC HUNT TESTS

AKC HUNT TEST

The American Kennel Club (AKC) offers a series of non-competitive hunt tests to evaluate the hunting abilities of retrievers. These tests are designed to simulate real hunting scenarios and assess a dog's natural skills, such as marking, retrieving, and obedience.

There are three levels of AKC hunt tests:

  1. Junior: This is the entry level, focusing on a dog's basic hunting instincts. Dogs are judged on their ability to mark and retrieve single birds on land and water. Tests consist of two series.
  2. Senior: At this level, dogs are expected to be steady and handle more complex retrieves. They must demonstrate the ability to mark and retrieve multiple birds, handle blinds, and honor another dog's retrieve
  3.  Master: This is the highest level, requiring dogs to perform challenging retrieves in difficult conditions. They must show a high degree of obedience, control, and hunting ability.

To earn a title at each level, dogs must pass the required number of tests. For example, a dog needs five qualifying scores in Senior tests to earn the Senior Hunter Title (AKC). The number of passes required varies by level and breed club.

Hunt tests are a great way to assess your retriever's hunting ability, identify areas for training, and enjoy a fun and rewarding experience with your dog.
